Appropriate technology is technology that users themselves can take ownership of—technology that supports their lives. In this case, we have developed a new Comprehensive Wastewater Reuse System (SIRAR) in a single-family home in the mountains where the previous septic tank was simply a drainage hole in the ground.
Over the course of two days, we installed an aerobic septic tank that allows fecal matter to separate from the water quickly and be composted. Meanwhile, the nutrient-rich water flows into a bed of gravel and plants to reduce the BOD before entering a productive landscape irrigation system.
When we involve families in the implementation of these systems, we increase the durability, self-sufficiency, accountability, and, therefore, the resilience of each of the components we incorporate into a home.
